Winter Woods Walk- #4 : Reading What Winter Leaves Behind
No Bow, No Pressure
Winter walks are honest. No tag soup stress. No tree picked out. Just boots, cold air, and time to look. Snow helps, but you don’t need it. Winter strips the woods down to the bones. Trails show up clearer. Beds look bigger. Rub lines stand out like neon.
Beds Tell the Story
Find a bed in winter and slow down. Look from it, not at it. What can the deer see? What wind would he want? Where does the escape route go? Most of the beds I find aren’t random. They’re tucked just off points, benches, or inside corners where a deer can smell danger and watch the rest.
Trails Don’t Lie
Winter trails are worn deep for a reason. If they cut across a sidehill instead of following the easy path, pay attention. Deer don’t burn calories for no reason. I mark these spots now so I’m not guessing in October.
Final Thoughts:
Half these walks end with numb fingers and a coffee stop, a pee break and atleast 10’ of TP torn off😷 Still worth it every time. Till we meet again my fellow DIY'ers, stay safe out there and watch where you're stepping 💩… feel free to leave a comment.
I ran across this feeding spot with a couple beds near the top of a ridge.
