Cold Truths- #4 : You’re Not Unlucky, You’re Just Late
The Lie We Tell Ourselves
Every year I hear it. “Man, I just can’t catch a break.” Wrong wind. Wrong day. Wrong spot. Wrong moon. Sometimes that’s true. Most times, it’s just us showing up after the party already happened.
Big deer don’t move on our schedule. They move when pressure eases, when the woods quiet down, and when they feel like nobody’s watching. If you’re always hunting weekends, always rolling in at daylight, always climbing the same tree… you’re not unlucky. You’re predictable.
Late Beats Loud
I’ve killed more deer slipping in late than I ever did charging in early. Let the woods settle. Let the orange army clear out. Deer get on their feet once the chaos fades. I’ve watched trails that were dead at first light turn into highways at 10:30. Tracks going both ways. Fresh droppings. A snapped sapling that wasn’t there yesterday. That’s not luck. That’s timing.
Adjust or Keep Complaining
You can keep blaming the wind, the neighbors, the state game commission, or the guy who parked too close in his 81 Chevy Luv. Or you can adjust. Hunt later. Sit longer. Still-hunt when everyone else is climbing down. Make one small change and see what happens.
Cold truth? Deer don’t owe us movement just because we woke up
Final Thoughts:
I still love a dark walk in. But I’ve learned not to pack up just because the clock says I should’ve seen something by now. It takes discipline to stay a little longer than you usually would, but it's payed off for me several times. I once saw a dude walking by wearing a hot pink camo outfit and tap shoes??? 🤔 Good luck my fellow DIY'ers, and feel free to leave a comment.
Cold morning walk in the PA mountains, but it was worth it.
