Cold Truths -#5 : Confidence Gets You Killed Faster Than Doubt

When You “Know” Too Much

The moment you think you’ve got deer figured out is usually the moment they humble you. Confidence feels good. It also makes you sloppy. You stop checking wind as hard. You cut corners on access. You hunt a spot because it’s always been good. That’s when things go quiet.

Doubt Makes You Pay Attention

Doubt keeps your head on a swivel. It makes you double-check sign, second-guess setups, and stay longer than planned. Some of my best sits came when I didn’t feel great about the spot. I hunted it slow. Careful. Ready to move if it felt wrong. That mindset kills more deer than blind confidence ever did.

Respect the Reset

Every sit deserves respect like it’s the first one there. Deer don’t care about last year’s trail cam pics or how many times you’ve seen them cross that saddle. Cold truth? Confidence without caution is just arrogance wearing camo. I've spent long hours and/ or several days sitting in a tree that I just knew would pay off. Only to be disappointed and move to a different area and end up being successful in the new spot 🤔.

Final Thoughts :

Anytime I start feeling “dialed,” I remind myself how fast the woods can shut me up. This is when your scouting homework needs to be addressed… Don’t assume last year's trail cam pic big buck is gonna stroll on by this year? You know what “ASSUME” stands for?😜 I fell for this trap too many times before learning my lesson. Don't be a dummy like me fellow DIY'ers. Until next time, be safe out there … Comments welcome, below.
